Poem in Your Pocket Day

Maybe you already know this but today is National Poem in your Pocket Day. I must admit that this is the first I’ve ever heard of it.
I was aware that this is National Poetry Month and I’ve been exposed to a lot of lovely writing out there in the blogosphere and facebook land but I never heard about this special day until like…yesterday.

So… I’m not a poet. But you don’t have to be to enjoy this day. There are lots of poets out there making the job easier for us.
I’m going to attach a couple of links you should check out if you want to immerse yourself in poetry goodness. Then I’ll leave you with a little Shel Silverstein. Cause, you know, he is the master.

This showed up on my newsfeed yesterday and I was intrigued.

Here you can choose from 20 poems that have been selected for this day. You just pick one, print several copies, put one in your pocket and give the rest away.  I like “Spell”.

Lazarus Jewelbox

This guy. He has written a poem or two everyday this month and posted them to his blog. I found his blog over three years ago when I was searching out book lists associated with LOST. He read and blogged on all the books and was a big inspiration for me to do the same. (Even though my initial commitment was and is to read all the books and not necessarily review them, the bug did eventually get me.) He wrote his reviews on a much more intelligent level. If mine ever leave you wanting more, please, by all means, visit his site.

Anyway, this poem, Lazarus Jewelbox is one I really like, I think you will too.

And now for something totally awesome….

SMART

My dad gave me one dollar bill
‘Cause I’m his smartest son,
And I swapped it for two shiny quarters
‘Cause two is more than one!

And then I took the quarters
And traded them to Lou
For three dimes-I guess he don’t know
That three is more than two!

Just then, along came old blind Bates
And just ’cause he can’t see
He gave me four nickles for my three dimes,
And four is more than three!

And I took the nickles to Hiram Coombs
Down at the seed-feed store,
And the fool gave me five pennies for them,
And five is more than four!

And then I went and showed my dad,
And he got red in the cheeks
And closed his eyes and shook his head-
Too proud of me to speak!

Have a great day everyone!!
